Game Changr designs and runs player research for studios and publishers that need more than a list of comments. Its work is built around a practical question: what is actually preventing players from understanding, valuing, or enjoying a game, and what should the production team do next?

For this confidential project, NEOWIZ commissioned Game Changr to plan and conduct the playtest. Game Changr worked directly with NEOWIZ to define the research needs, the test conditions and the participant profiles. Game Changr then brought in Playruo to provide the technical environment required to run the sessions remotely.

The operating model was straightforward: NEOWIZ was Game Changr's client, Game Changr owned the research engagement, and Playruo supported Game Changr as the technology provider.

“With Playruo, we ran secure remote playtests in just a few days, without having to worry about every player’s PC setup.” Raphaël Doyen, Founder & Researcher, Game Changr

The brief: recruit for relevance, not hardware

The project involved a confidential and technically demanding build. Game Changr needed to find participants who matched the research criteria without limiting recruitment to people who happened to own powerful gaming PCs.

In a conventional remote playtest, hardware requirements can become an unintended screening criterion. Recruiters may have to check each participant's GPU, RAM, operating system and available storage before confirming a session.

That creates two problems. It adds operational work, and it can exclude relevant players whose computers cannot run the build locally. The resulting sample risks reflecting hardware ownership instead of the audience the research is meant to understand.

Game Changr wanted to keep those questions separate:

  1. Is this the right player for the study?
  2. What infrastructure is required to run the game?

Playruo handled the second question so Game Changr could stay focused on the first.

A clear client, research and technology setup

NEOWIZ worked directly with Game Changr as the client for the study. The NEOWIZ contacts involved included Justin Carnahan, Brand Director; Sojung Lee, Senior Brand Manager; and Tina Shin, Brand Manager.

Game Changr led the client relationship, research design, participant recruitment, session operations and analysis. Raphaël Doyen and his team translated NEOWIZ's needs into a practical playtest protocol.

Playruo worked directly with Game Changr on the technical layer. Its role was to prepare the cloud environment, keep access controlled and deliver the build through the browser. Playruo was not the research agency and did not manage the NEOWIZ relationship.

Removing the PC configuration from recruitment

With Playruo, the game ran on cloud hardware and streamed to each participant's browser. The player's own computer no longer had to meet the requirements of the build itself.

Game Changr could therefore recruit according to the research objective rather than the power of each candidate's PC. Participants joined through a browser-based flow while the game ran in a consistent remote environment.

Protecting a confidential build without complicating the player journey

The build remained on Playruo's cloud infrastructure rather than being distributed to participant computers. Access was limited to the people and session windows defined for the playtest.

For Game Changr, this created a simpler participant journey without turning build security into an additional research workstream. Players did not need to receive, install or configure the game locally.

For NEOWIZ, the client, the build could be tested remotely under the conditions agreed directly with Game Changr. Playruo enabled those conditions technically through its work with Game Changr.

A few days from technical setup to remote sessions

The series of secure remote playtests was prepared in a few days. Game Changr already owned the research plan and participant context. Playruo concentrated on making the build available in the required cloud environment and supporting the delivery workflow.

That division of responsibilities preserved Game Changr's attention for the work its client had hired it to do: recruit the right participants, observe their behaviour and turn the sessions into useful recommendations.

The practical outcome was clear:

  • Recruitment did not depend on every participant owning a high-end PC.
  • Participants used a consistent hardware environment.
  • The confidential build was not distributed for local installation.
  • Game Changr retained ownership of the research and the NEOWIZ relationship.
  • Playruo remained focused on technical delivery for Game Changr.

Game Changr turned player behaviour into actionable findings

Removing the technical constraint was only useful because it gave Game Changr more room to focus on research quality.

A player saying “I don't understand what to do” can point to very different causes. The core loop may be poorly calibrated. An intended action may not be readable. A placeholder may make the current build misleading. Or the game's promise may have created an expectation that the mechanic does not fulfil.

Treating every one of those situations as an interface problem would produce the wrong recommendation.

Game Changr therefore triangulates three forms of evidence:

  1. What the player actually does
  2. What the player says about the experience
  3. What a replay of the relevant sequence reveals in context

The aim is to identify the cause behind a behaviour and deliver a recommendation that can be discussed by the client team, rather than simply restating participant comments.

When an apparent UI issue points somewhere else

One anonymised example illustrates the value of this approach.

Telemetry showed that players were not using certain actions. The initial hypothesis was that those actions might not be sufficiently visible or understandable.

The research indicated a different issue. Players had noticed the actions and understood that they were available. They were choosing not to use them because the actions did not feel economically worthwhile within the game's progression.

The useful question was therefore not how to redesign the interface. It was how the game communicated value and rewarded the behaviour it wanted to encourage.

By combining observed behaviour, player explanations and replay, Game Changr could direct the recommendation toward the system that actually needed attention.

A repeatable model for confidential remote research

This project demonstrates a clear chain of responsibility.

NEOWIZ commissioned Game Changr. Game Changr worked directly with its client to define and run the study. Game Changr engaged Playruo to provide the secure remote technology needed to execute the sessions without making participant hardware part of the recruitment criteria.

Each organisation stayed within its area of responsibility:

  • NEOWIZ set the client requirements with Game Changr.
  • Game Changr led the research and the client engagement.
  • Playruo enabled the remote sessions technically for Game Changr.

The result was a workflow that let Game Changr recruit the right players, protect access to a confidential build and keep its attention on the findings the playtest was designed to produce.

Studios and publishers can work with Game Changr on research design and delivery. Research teams that need secure browser-based access to demanding builds can explore Playruo for Remote Playtesting or contact Playruo.
